Well I am back in the bay area. Its good to be back in California although I will always love portland. I took a job again at Image Movers Digital. Its a bit of a course correction for me, I found myself to far on the development side of things and wanted to make sure I was involved in the art side as well. I am happiest being able to do both technical and artistic work.

This photo is another from my vacation on the oregon coast. It is using a tilt and shift lens, but more in the manner that the lense is intended rather than to get the miniature effect. I was able to keep the f-stop around 2 and yet get the large rock in the distance and the close up wall with holes in focus. Its a really nice lens. It doesn't have auto focus and in tilting and shifting it makes the in camera light meter inaccurate. I actually like both of those aspects as it forces me to be a bit more traditional about how I shoot. You definitely lose something letting the computer do all the thinking for you.

The holes in the foreground rock were birds nests, thought there were no occupants.

I really liked the different layers in this photo, from the black rocks in the front, the receding waves making triangles on its way out, the green water of the ocean and the smooth mild blue sky. This was another shot while on vacation on the coast.

We went to visit my brother in Medford a week ago. He took us up to Crater Lake. It was a cloudy day and so the water wasn't bright blue like it often is in pictures. It was however perfectly still and mirroring the sky remarkably. Between the scale and how well it reflected the sky, it was a bit disorienting to see clouds while looking down.

As you are walking along it's often easy to miss things. I try and follow advice I was given a long time ago, and look around. You get so focused on one thing that you might not even see the more interesting picture, in this case beneath me. Ocala and I were walking along the beach, up in the drift wood and I was looking out at the ocean. I recalled the advice and looked down to see these plants growing in the sand. "Honckeny apeploides" according to the internet. Each one was growing so perfectly and the white stalks around them set them off nicely, I thought.

We hiked through the dunes in Pacific City and saw the ocean waves coming in through the rocks. I thought the whole scene looked rather prehistoric. The waves were crashing in and water was spilling out onto the rocks above and panning out.

This is another shot from the beach. There were a lot of crab shells all along the beach, along with sand dollars and clam shells. I was amazed at the texture on the shell, how it bubbled up on the surface of the shell and became a richer shade of purple near the center of the top of the shell. I thought the texture of the sand and the shell was a nice contrast.

Taken a couple of years back, very early in the morning as storms and the ducks made their way across Lake Superior. I just liked the subtlety of the picture. The ducks were completely silent as they went along while the distant storms rumbled. It felt like I was watching a funeral procession.

Well the new design is up. I will be upgrading old posts and comments to this format for a bit, there is a lot of them.

In other news, the Host is out on blu-ray today. And I have been at a new job for the past few months. Its a new company being started by Robert Zemekis, of Forrest Gump and Back to the Future Fame. Its a startup company being funded by Disney. It should be interesting.

I shot this a couple of years ago, while visiting the North Shore in Minnesota. I carried the frame around with me for a while trying to frame things. I finally settled on this little rocky valley that I had been waiting to see if a stream would form in. I thought the sharp cornered, very straight frame was an interesting contrast to the wave beaten rocks and curvy stream.

I took this along the shore line in front of the house I rented during my honeymoon last year. There was a small cliffish walk down to the lake from the backyard of the house down to a little private cove. It was only like 3 or 4 in the afternoon but the dappled light was traveling fast across the rocks. Its was a peaceful little spot with the waves softly crashing against the rocks. The bay was full of oval pebbles washed about by the constant waves.

Work has been crazy lately. I am programming stuff for the artists to use and trying to be a supervisor at the same time. I think this project will have everyone stretched a little thin.

They are sending me to Korea in about a month for I think about three weeks (maybe less). It will be my first time out of North America. I will let you all know how it goes. I got a spiffy new lens that I am hoping to get shots with over there.

Its funny these days I look at almost everything as a chance to take interesting photos. Danger? who cares... it will make an awesome shot! : )

Another picture from the past weekend in Minnesota. Everytime I go there I am drawn to take pictures around the river. I say "around" because it isn't really about taking picture of the river itself, but rather the atmosphere and life surrounding it. In a lot of ways the Mississippi reminds me of walking down railroad tracks. You see the backyards and hidden things of places, not the pristine front that faces the road. Here's where weeds grow, fallen trees remain and ducks are free to go about their business.

I find it interesting that so much of my life revolves around light. This site is full of pictures capturing it. My job at work is to create stories and images out of little squares of colored light.

One of my photography teachers, when I was in school, taught the science behind light as part of his courses. He was a big inspiration to me, more for his passion for it than anything else. He really made you understand the complex nature and harmony that enters your lens.

Ansel Adams used his experience in music in working on his photographs. He saw scales in his pictures, as in his music. It is hard not to think of that when I am at work adjusting colors to be just right. People often say that images aren't as powerful as music... but I think when you tune them, those frequencies of light, they sing.

Now believe it or not, I do actually have some pictures of non blue skies. They are just harder to come by out here in California. Like I said in an earlier post, I tend to feel like I am still trying to get my feet out here taking photographs. One of the main reasons is that I am used to things changing over the year. Don't get me wrong, things do change... but I could take a picture now of the same view and it would look remarkably similar to that same one I could take everyday. I find myself missing the Midwest a lot these days. I miss Minnesota in particular quite a bit. Although last winter in Washington state, I felt like I wouldn't mind missing a winter, I now feel like it is going to be really strange not to see one. There are some days that I would give anything to see snow out the window while I sipped on some hot cocoa. There was just something about the dreary days of winter in Minnesota like the one above that always made me feel like I belonged there. The day I took this was a few years ago when I was on my way to see my brother in Chicago. The train I was on had just left Minneapolis and was crossing through the Minnesota countryside before heading into Wisconsin. If I remember right, this was just before we got to Redwing, MN. Redwing is quite a beautiful place no matter what the season.

Here are more photos of my vacation trip to Michigan. This is a series of the Bocce Ball Tournament we played on the beach. Looking back now, I wish I had taken notes so I could have given more of a play by play. As it is I remember quite a bit. I hope you enjoy them.

Of the Michigan vacation there is still more to come. I will be finished with the shots of the fireworks fairly soon and will post them. After that there is still shots of the dune jumping and then a shots from all during the trip. Stay tuned. :)

This is also a test of my new way of posting images and tiles. I wrote php scripts that should make it a lot easier to get tile indexes like this one up. Now all I have to do is make the images, tile swatches, and write some text... rather than coding every html page and link. Makes things a lot easier.

"Chronologically this is one of the last images I took that day. It was long after the bocce ball tournament was over. I wanted to get a good introduction image so I threw all the balls out on the sand and shot until I got something I was happy with."

I took a bunch of photographs during the vacation I had to Michigan this summer. I am slowly weeding through them and fixing them up. I took a lot of photos on the island, but part of the artistic process is editing. Here is my selection of "keepers" from South Manitou Island. We took a trip there one of the days and spent the whole day wandering the island. I was trying out my blue and gold polarizer on my camera, so the colors of the photos were quite punched up. I apologize ahead of time if I got anyone's name wrong. : )
