Ocala and I are parents! Renn Kulig was born last week and came in just over 7.5 pounds. We are happy, scared and sleep deprived all at once.

This a shot from our honeymoon. Its one of my favorites and I have been saving it for a special occasion and this seemed like the best of them.

This sister image to the one a posted a few posts back. I was edging along a very steep beach in a cove on Lake Superior trying to see what was around the corner. I liked the ragged outlines in the image and the subtle lighting just hinting at what textures exist in the shapes.

Another shot here from the north shore. It was a tranquil day up in Grand Marias, an awesome little town a few hours north of Duluth, MN. If you ever find yourself there, you should grab a slice of pizza at Sven & Olies. Everytime I find myself there, life seems like a different animal all together. This shot is from Artist's Point. With the flat rock formations, a lot of pools tend to form. I thought the image had a good subtle contrast in the textures, the wind blown pool with its little ripples, the straight rigid rock formations, and the large expanse of lake superior. You can see quite a few other shots from Artist's Point if you click on the tag of "grand marais" below.

I liked the simplicity of this shot. It was down on the beach looking out along the edges of the bay I was standing in, trying to peek around the corner and see what was there. I couldn't get any farther down along the waters edge and so it had the "edge of the world" feeling. It was almost like one of those video games where the game map stops and you can't run over a tiny little hedge.

Well the new design is up. I will be upgrading old posts and comments to this format for a bit, there is a lot of them.

In other news, the Host is out on blu-ray today. And I have been at a new job for the past few months. Its a new company being started by Robert Zemekis, of Forrest Gump and Back to the Future Fame. Its a startup company being funded by Disney. It should be interesting.

I shot this a couple of years ago, while visiting the North Shore in Minnesota. I carried the frame around with me for a while trying to frame things. I finally settled on this little rocky valley that I had been waiting to see if a stream would form in. I thought the sharp cornered, very straight frame was an interesting contrast to the wave beaten rocks and curvy stream.

I took this along the shore line in front of the house I rented during my honeymoon last year. There was a small cliffish walk down to the lake from the backyard of the house down to a little private cove. It was only like 3 or 4 in the afternoon but the dappled light was traveling fast across the rocks. Its was a peaceful little spot with the waves softly crashing against the rocks. The bay was full of oval pebbles washed about by the constant waves.

Things are still pretty crazy. I haven't gone to Korea yet, they keep moving around the shooting schedule. It looks like it will be the end of October.

This shot is another honeymoon pic and one that I like a lot. "Dandelions?" you might say, "everyone shoots those!" Well all I can say is that they bring back wonderful memories and there is something very respectable about such a beautiful plant that prefers to be called a weed rather than a flower.

By the way, anyone seen where I left September? I swear it's around here somewhere.

They are sending me to Korea in about a month for I think about three weeks (maybe less). It will be my first time out of North America. I will let you all know how it goes. I got a spiffy new lens that I am hoping to get shots with over there.

Its funny these days I look at almost everything as a chance to take interesting photos. Danger? who cares... it will make an awesome shot! : )

This is another shot from the Split Rock Lighthouse. It is the climb up to where the lens is held. I don't really think its the prettiest photo, but the contrasts in it held my interest. The geometric contrasts of the square bricks and window against the elegant arch of the stairs. Its a bunch of squares and rectangles trying to exist in cylindrical world of the lighthouse.

The lighting is also in contrast and is what initiated the photo. The warm light from the sun coming in the window and the cool glare on the bricks from the blue sky visible above.

Whenever I see a lighthouse the thing that fascinates me the most is the lens that focuses the light. The Fresnel lens made light houses range much greater and also helped pave the way for photography lenses. We also use some of the same techniques in my 3d work to approximate proper reflections and lighting.

Another picture from the past weekend in Minnesota. Everytime I go there I am drawn to take pictures around the river. I say "around" because it isn't really about taking picture of the river itself, but rather the atmosphere and life surrounding it. In a lot of ways the Mississippi reminds me of walking down railroad tracks. You see the backyards and hidden things of places, not the pristine front that faces the road. Here's where weeds grow, fallen trees remain and ducks are free to go about their business.

<previous June 02 2005 - 01 In Flight Over Minnesotanext>
I flew home to Minnesota this past weekend. I say home despite the fact I haven't lived there for a few years now and I didn't grow up there. But it is the midwest.. and its the place I remember feeling the most comfortable. I miss the lushness of early summer. I like northern California, but the amount of life and green in Minneapolis when I was there is overwhelming.

This is another cloud shot, everybody takes these, I know. I was taking them mostly for work reference (you never know when you are going to be asked to make clouds), but thought this one turned out really pretty. The combination of sunset colors outside and the polarizer on my lens reacting with the polarized air plane glass made for a nice range of color.

I find myself getting pulled in so many directions lately. I have photos to take, 3d characters to model, 3d environments to make, tools to program, c++ to learn, and several stories that have been brewing in my head to write. Its like having children.. you don't want to neglect any of them... but then concentrating on all of them means you spend little time on any of them. So you lock them all up down in the basement just to be fair. : )

This shot was taken years ago with one of my old point and shoots. It has always meant a lot to me. I grew up traveling down tracks like these and yet the first time I walked these tracks it was a new adventure. I had never really lived in a big city before, much less hiked around one... and I was just getting to know Ocala. These tracks are "her" tracks... the ones she grew up around.

Work has been crazy lately... as you can see from my lack of posts. I was two hours away from a 100 hour work week last week. The project is almost done and I find myself motivated by the thought of never having to touch it again.

The whole experience has made me think a lot about what I want out of life. I have never really thought of my jobs as work. It isn't that they aren't hard or sometimes painful, but being in an art related field tends to lend itself to not thinking of a job that way. I have an ambition to create and would be doing so even if I wasn't getting paid for it. Work seems to provide a good opportunity to do that. The thing about being an artist is that you are one all the time... I don't just put on my artist hat when I go to work. Because of all this, I often turn all my effort towards it without feeling like a work-aholic. It has kind of snuck up on my that way. I find myself "making a living, without having a life" to steal a quote from George Carlin.

I have promised myself to get back to living. : ) I am planning a road-trip after this project ends. I use "planning" in the loosest sense of the word, as in... I am making time for it.. and letting the wind take me where it will ( though I do have some ideas ). Hopefully I will get to take tons of photographs. Photographs never ever feel like work... I could do that 24/7. Sometimes I feel like I missed my calling... though at the same time ... I am kind of glad it isn't my job.

I can tell already that today is going to be one of those days where you drown in the pace of it all and it is all over before you even feel awake. The kind of day that I try not to have.

While I was sitting here typing, Afta saw a spider crawling down the wall. Even after it met with a toilet paper squashing death, she sits staring at the wall. She is both horrified and intrigued by bugs. When she was a kitten, she let out a loud yelp and ran to the other side of the room at her first sight of a bug. It was a beetle crawling along near the ceiling. She eyed the ceiling for weeks after that. It was as if her whole safe little apartment world had been shattered.

Watching that little drama unfold just now made today seem a little better and slower. : )

My uncle is very ill. I am not sure how old he is, but he is my Dad's older brother... and since my Dad would be like 78 now.. my uncle must be in his mid 80's.

The other day I was in the checkout line and saw that Harrison Ford was on the cover of the Enquirer for some ridiculous "Drunken Binge!" article. Obviously he went out and had a drink or two.. and got the usual drunk photos (the kind everybody gets) taken of him. Looking at the pictures of him I was thinking about how my lifetime had aged the man. I think about that a lot with celebrities, him specifically, since I am so used to seeing the much younger version of him gallivanting around the galaxy and finding precious artifacts in long forgotten caves.

But it always hits me as a surprise to see what it does to people I know. It gets accelerated when you move away from your family. Kids grow up in a couple of visits... Adults go gray overnight. My uncle is one of the kindest most gentle people I have ever met. He has a voice that you never confuse with anyone else. Him and my aunt lived near me when I was growing up for quite a while. I saw 'The Wizard of Oz' for the first time sitting in their living room. When I broke my arm in 6th grade, they came and got me. My aunt made a make-shift splint until we got to the hospital.

When I saw the church being knocked down it reminded me of another leaning building I had first seen on the same day. The Pillsbury building down by St. Anthony Main has been leaning for quite a while. You can see it a bit in the picture. I tried to line up the windows on the right side of the picture with the frame since. As you move left across the picture you can see the tilt. Granted, some of it is the perspective of the picture and the 50mm lens.. but trust me.. it isn't affecting it all that much. The wall of the building looks like it has a beer belly and the edge along the roof is arching in toward the building. You can see in the bottom of the picture that they have reinforced it with metal beams, but it is a disconcerting feeling walking by the place. It always makes me feel off balance.

This is from the dock area down at St. Anthony Main in Minneapolis, MN. The atmosphere the day I took this was very somber and quiet, as it was hovering between 0-10 degrees (F). As on a lot of the photos from that day, the blurring around the edges is actually from the heat of my hand as I adjusted the lens. It was so cold that my camera kept fogging up when I touched the metal of the focus ring.

A few days before this was a church. I had noticed several years ago that one of the walls was leaning badly while walking by. They eventually put supports on the wall. But last year another part of the building fell off and did substantial damage to a nearby house. From what I am told they were unable to raise enough money to repair the building so it was torn down. I wish I had got out and taken some pictures a few days before this, most of the building was still there, but by the time I had a chance the building was almost completely gone. The site reminded me of all those old world war II pictures of various bombed out buildings through Europe.

I just got back from Minneapolis, where I spent the holidays with Ocala's family. I had a good time. It is always interesting to revisit somewhere you used to live. I always find myself remembering other times I was in the same place and wondering if I had any idea back then of where I am now. Now believe it or not, I do actually have some pictures of non blue skies. They are just harder to come by out here in California. Like I said in an earlier post, I tend to feel like I am still trying to get my feet out here taking photographs. One of the main reasons is that I am used to things changing over the year. Don't get me wrong, things do change... but I could take a picture now of the same view and it would look remarkably similar to that same one I could take everyday. I find myself missing the Midwest a lot these days. I miss Minnesota in particular quite a bit. Although last winter in Washington state, I felt like I wouldn't mind missing a winter, I now feel like it is going to be really strange not to see one. There are some days that I would give anything to see snow out the window while I sipped on some hot cocoa. There was just something about the dreary days of winter in Minnesota like the one above that always made me feel like I belonged there. The day I took this was a few years ago when I was on my way to see my brother in Chicago. The train I was on had just left Minneapolis and was crossing through the Minnesota countryside before heading into Wisconsin. If I remember right, this was just before we got to Redwing, MN. Redwing is quite a beautiful place no matter what the season.

A hood ornament with my old camera in a junk yard north of Spokane. I loved the variation of color in the hood.

I wandered around that junkyard for sometime. It had a lot of inspiration for texture work. I always love abandoned cars and houses. It reminds me of where I grew up. There were old farm houses everywhere.

A friend of mine and I carefully crossed the collapsed floor of one such house miles away from anywhere. In one far side of a room was a table and chair. On the table was an old corroded pistol and a jar of empty bullets. There was a book about the county I grew up in called "Bloody Williamson". I never read it, but it was supposed to be about the days of prohibition and how the mob from Chicago brewed all the alcohol in the backwoods where I grew up. Evidence of it was everywhere. It always seemed like when prohibition was repealed they must have just dropped everything and left. At that same house a boat was still tied to the pier in a small pond. It sank the minute my friend touched it. I have no idea how it managed to stay afloat all that time. It was a bizarre and memorable moment.

These cars reminded me of even older ones abandoned in a field near my house back then. The way they were left made them ideal for playing through chase scenes for hours. Imagining shooting out the glass that was already gone.....I'll stop now, I could go on for hours. : ) ah childhood...

<previous January 13 2003 - 01 next>

Another ice picture from my little macro ice series. This one is even closer in on the ice then the last one. The lens was practically touching the ice... well as close as I could get it to focus that is.

These are really hard to appreciate fully in this format (tiny on the website). I provided a couple of close up crops from the main picture. The detail on these is amazing... well at least to me : ). That is what is so cool about real life; the closer you look, the more there is to see.

Nature really is an amazingly complex system. These images came out with very little color. I tinted them to remove them from reality a little bit. It was my intent to do so as I took them. Where I could, I pulled out the color that was there, which was in some cases amazing.

There is still more of these to come. I will post another in the next few days. Have to space my photos out a bit, I am running low. : )

Just thought I would add another note: I actually like the cropping of the two bubbles better than the whole photo. It is a stronger more surreal image. It looks like an illustration about cell division.

It's full of stars! ... wait... no.. make that bubbles.

I went down to the stone arch bridge on the river in downtown Minneapolis. I looked down at the ice river and snapped a few shots. Remembering the success I had had with close up shots of ice before, I thought I would give it another try.

I went down to the river and walked around on the edge of the ice for a while looking for abstract shots I could play with in photoshop. I took a bunch of really close up shots edging out onto the ice very carefully.

The monolith from 2001 came into mind as I stooped there on the ice staring into its depths. It was very hard, cold and much of it was solid black. Only a close look revealed the inner dimensions of it.
