The sister image to my previous post. It was taken the day before as daylight approached in the mountains. This is from a trip I took on a train to go home for xmas in 2002. Guess I am posting snow pictures because I am envious of the rest of the country's cold spell and blizzard. Here in California it's just overcast.

Ocala and I are parents! Renn Kulig was born last week and came in just over 7.5 pounds. We are happy, scared and sleep deprived all at once.

This a shot from our honeymoon. Its one of my favorites and I have been saving it for a special occasion and this seemed like the best of them.

I always find the north bay very interesting. Its cool being back in this area. Its a really unique landscape. It has the golden hills of San Jose, but also large flat valleys where the bay seeps in.

This image is from a year ago, when I was waiting for my car to get fixed. There are a set of small walkways to the powerline towers out in the swampy areas of the bay. This one didn't have any gates. So we walked out to a couple of the towers and I snapped this shot trying to frame the scene.

The industrial area along the north east side of the river is very interesting. It seamlessly transitions from industrial to small commercial to residential as you move away from the river. Right up from the street this facility is a brewery and a few bars. Up the street from that, is a park, hospital and a school with houses mixed in.

As you are walking along it's often easy to miss things. I try and follow advice I was given a long time ago, and look around. You get so focused on one thing that you might not even see the more interesting picture, in this case beneath me. Ocala and I were walking along the beach, up in the drift wood and I was looking out at the ocean. I recalled the advice and looked down to see these plants growing in the sand. "Honckeny apeploides" according to the internet. Each one was growing so perfectly and the white stalks around them set them off nicely, I thought.

Another picture from the past weekend in Minnesota. Everytime I go there I am drawn to take pictures around the river. I say "around" because it isn't really about taking picture of the river itself, but rather the atmosphere and life surrounding it. In a lot of ways the Mississippi reminds me of walking down railroad tracks. You see the backyards and hidden things of places, not the pristine front that faces the road. Here's where weeds grow, fallen trees remain and ducks are free to go about their business.

This is a shot I took on the last day of my vacation. Work has kept me pretty busy. The hours aren't bad but the commute adds 2-3 hrs a day depending on how much I am willing to break the laws of physics. There is a lot of beautiful stuff along the drive, I have been tempted to stop everyday and take shots but always find myself in a rush.

This particular view isn't along my drive but rather along the coast on the drive between Santa Cruz and San Francisco. It was a beautiful day that was constantly being chased by huge storms coming off the ocean.

We took the BART and the MUNI, parts of San Francisco's train system, to go see a art show at Giant Robot. It was made up of a variety of artists all doing work based on the theme of "tree". As with every trip to a Giant Robot store, there were lots of magazines/figures I wanted to buy. Unlike usual, I managed to resist as I am dirt poor until work starts.

I thought I would start the new year off right, so here is one of my favorite pictures. The picture felt appropriate given that most of the country is shrouded in winter. We just got back from Minnesota yesterday. It was interesting seeing the change in climate. When I left San Jose it was 60 degrees.. and when I arrived in Minneapolis it was a whopping -23 degrees with the wind chill. I snapped this shot while on a train going back to Spokane a few years back. While waiting for an interview today I wondered around the Presidio in San Francisco. This picture is from underneath the 101 before it goes up the the Golden Gate Bridge. The ground was slanted and a path had formed on the side of the hill. When I looked at it closely I saw that the feet that made it were tiny. Pigeons had made it. Further on down the path I encountered a group of pigeons moving in single file down the path. We all moved by each other quietly. It reminded me of how people act when you pass by them while hiking, eyeing you carefully and then nodding in acknowledgement.

This is one of my favorites. We were on our way to Spokane, and saw the Rockies for the first time. Driving through the middle of them, we went from a dry brown day into a snow storm. I say storm, but it never really hit us. It just touched the tops of the mountains. It was massive and silent. We began listening to audiobooks of The Lord of the Rings to pass the long three day trip. My impressions of the story are now fused with seeing the rockies and vice versa.

I spent a lot of the time during the trip setting the metering on my little camera while driving with my elbows, nudging ocala out of sleep, handing her the camera and saying, "Get me a shot of that". Poor girl. : )

Work has been crazy lately... as you can see from my lack of posts. I was two hours away from a 100 hour work week last week. The project is almost done and I find myself motivated by the thought of never having to touch it again.

The whole experience has made me think a lot about what I want out of life. I have never really thought of my jobs as work. It isn't that they aren't hard or sometimes painful, but being in an art related field tends to lend itself to not thinking of a job that way. I have an ambition to create and would be doing so even if I wasn't getting paid for it. Work seems to provide a good opportunity to do that. The thing about being an artist is that you are one all the time... I don't just put on my artist hat when I go to work. Because of all this, I often turn all my effort towards it without feeling like a work-aholic. It has kind of snuck up on my that way. I find myself "making a living, without having a life" to steal a quote from George Carlin.

I have promised myself to get back to living. : ) I am planning a road-trip after this project ends. I use "planning" in the loosest sense of the word, as in... I am making time for it.. and letting the wind take me where it will ( though I do have some ideas ). Hopefully I will get to take tons of photographs. Photographs never ever feel like work... I could do that 24/7. Sometimes I feel like I missed my calling... though at the same time ... I am kind of glad it isn't my job.

My uncle is very ill. I am not sure how old he is, but he is my Dad's older brother... and since my Dad would be like 78 now.. my uncle must be in his mid 80's.

The other day I was in the checkout line and saw that Harrison Ford was on the cover of the Enquirer for some ridiculous "Drunken Binge!" article. Obviously he went out and had a drink or two.. and got the usual drunk photos (the kind everybody gets) taken of him. Looking at the pictures of him I was thinking about how my lifetime had aged the man. I think about that a lot with celebrities, him specifically, since I am so used to seeing the much younger version of him gallivanting around the galaxy and finding precious artifacts in long forgotten caves.

But it always hits me as a surprise to see what it does to people I know. It gets accelerated when you move away from your family. Kids grow up in a couple of visits... Adults go gray overnight. My uncle is one of the kindest most gentle people I have ever met. He has a voice that you never confuse with anyone else. Him and my aunt lived near me when I was growing up for quite a while. I saw 'The Wizard of Oz' for the first time sitting in their living room. When I broke my arm in 6th grade, they came and got me. My aunt made a make-shift splint until we got to the hospital.

Its funny, but turning 30 seems a lot younger to me than turning 27 did. I guess it is because it is about the beginning of a decade rather than the end of one. I find myself setting goals of what I want to accomplish in the next ten years and they seem a lot less far-fetched then what I set about to try and did when I was in my twenties.

This is one of my favorite photos of the trip. Its a moment in time. I took this same shot earlier, noticing the hill. It was sunny at the time and the hill only stood out a little. As I was walking back it got rather stormy and overcast. A single opening sent a dot of light moving over the landscape. I first saw it on the trees on the other side of the hill. I waited and sure enough it crossed over to the hill I was looking at earlier and as quick as it was there it continued on and over the next hill.

It was the first time I have ever actually been out of the US, though I grazed the border of Canada several times when I lived in Spokane, WA. Another ice picture from my little macro ice series. This one is even closer in on the ice then the last one. The lens was practically touching the ice... well as close as I could get it to focus that is.

These are really hard to appreciate fully in this format (tiny on the website). I provided a couple of close up crops from the main picture. The detail on these is amazing... well at least to me : ). That is what is so cool about real life; the closer you look, the more there is to see.

Nature really is an amazingly complex system. These images came out with very little color. I tinted them to remove them from reality a little bit. It was my intent to do so as I took them. Where I could, I pulled out the color that was there, which was in some cases amazing.

There is still more of these to come. I will post another in the next few days. Have to space my photos out a bit, I am running low. : )

Just thought I would add another note: I actually like the cropping of the two bubbles better than the whole photo. It is a stronger more surreal image. It looks like an illustration about cell division.

It's full of stars! ... wait... no.. make that bubbles.

I went down to the stone arch bridge on the river in downtown Minneapolis. I looked down at the ice river and snapped a few shots. Remembering the success I had had with close up shots of ice before, I thought I would give it another try.

I went down to the river and walked around on the edge of the ice for a while looking for abstract shots I could play with in photoshop. I took a bunch of really close up shots edging out onto the ice very carefully.

The monolith from 2001 came into mind as I stooped there on the ice staring into its depths. It was very hard, cold and much of it was solid black. Only a close look revealed the inner dimensions of it.

I took this while wandering around St. Anthony Main in Minneapolis over the Christmas holiday. I have taken this same shot several times, as it is an old haunt of mine. It has always said something about Minneapolis and my life there to me. Even though this one is in color, I consider it a sister image to the one I took of Lake Road in Southern Illinois.

When I first came to Minneapolis, I spent the two weeks before school started, wandering the city, not by car, but on foot. I wander through downtown, to St. Anthony Main and through the neighborhoods back there (I walked right by Ocala's house on the sidewalk in fact). It had always been in my nature to do this. People that knew me well, knew this about me. I was prone to spending my free time wandering places, exploring.

As school started, I soon got completely absorbed in it and the rat race that it was. I began to see that as what "city life" was. It wore on me. The city seemed dirt ridden and sick. One of my teachers at MCAD noticed my condition one day and after class asked me how I was. He paraphrased Virginia Wolfe by stating that all a writer needed to write was enough money to get by and "a room of one's own". He thought this applied very much to artists as well and encouraged me to find that kind of thing. I thought of the major change in my life in that I didn't "hike" anymore. That had always been my comfort and my grounding.

I took it up again the following Saturday with a new friend I had met only days before with the curious name of Ocala. Thus began a long friendship which eventually turned into more. I developed a way of looking at things at that time. It had always been a strong influence on me, but it gained a lot of validity then. It was that there was a wilderness that existed everywhere. The woods that I grew up in never really ended. In some shape and form they extended all the way to Minneapolis. Following the tracks in Minneapolis lead me to all kinds of interesting places and showed me a side of the city teeming with the wild that I needed. And so I see the two photos as sister images, two kinds of wilderness and two adventures on the verge of happening.
