I took this last week while on vacation on the Oregon coast. There is a little town called OceanSide just south of Tillamook Bay and Ocala and I wandered along the beach there. It was just after it had rained, suddenly there was blue sky to be seen and the sun came out.

This is another shot from the beach. There were a lot of crab shells all along the beach, along with sand dollars and clam shells. I was amazed at the texture on the shell, how it bubbled up on the surface of the shell and became a richer shade of purple near the center of the top of the shell. I thought the texture of the sand and the shell was a nice contrast.

The beach was very beautiful at Oceanside, but the town was interesting as well. This phone booth was next to the town hall. I hadn't seen one in a while and thought I would snap a shot.

We hiked through the dunes in Pacific City and saw the ocean waves coming in through the rocks. I thought the whole scene looked rather prehistoric. The waves were crashing in and water was spilling out onto the rocks above and panning out.

As you are walking along it's often easy to miss things. I try and follow advice I was given a long time ago, and look around. You get so focused on one thing that you might not even see the more interesting picture, in this case beneath me. Ocala and I were walking along the beach, up in the drift wood and I was looking out at the ocean. I recalled the advice and looked down to see these plants growing in the sand. "Honckeny apeploides" according to the internet. Each one was growing so perfectly and the white stalks around them set them off nicely, I thought.

We went to visit my brother in Medford a week ago. He took us up to Crater Lake. It was a cloudy day and so the water wasn't bright blue like it often is in pictures. It was however perfectly still and mirroring the sky remarkably. Between the scale and how well it reflected the sky, it was a bit disorienting to see clouds while looking down.

A couple of weekends ago I hiked around Portland, mostly along the river. I wandered an industrialized area on the east side of the river north of downtown. Crossing over a bridge I caught this view and snapped it with my tilt and shift lens adding a bit of the minature effect.

Happy Fourth everyone! We went up to Seattle and visited with friends and saw a ton of fireworks.

This picture is of the Fremont Bridge in Portland from the riverbank below. Its a really cool industrial area down there.

Considering the heat, I thought I would post a picture I took in Minneapolis when it was 10 below zero. You can't really tell how cold it is from the photo, but trust me it was very cold. I liked the texture of the cracked pavement and what the cold was doing to it.

The industrial area along the north east side of the river is very interesting. It seamlessly transitions from industrial to small commercial to residential as you move away from the river. Right up from the street this facility is a brewery and a few bars. Up the street from that, is a park, hospital and a school with houses mixed in.

I shot this out the sun roof of my old car. I had looked up a saw this amazing cloud formation while driving through downtown Minneapolis. It was right near sunset so the bulges were catching the warm red light.

The comments were broken on the site. Sorry about that. They are fixed now... I think. I also added a new byTag and byDate page with thumbnails.

This is another shot I took of the factory down by the riverfront here in portland. I found the dust catching the sunlight, while the facility was shadowed by the highway 405 bridge interesting.

I really liked the different layers in this photo, from the black rocks in the front, the receding waves making triangles on its way out, the green water of the ocean and the smooth mild blue sky. This was another shot while on vacation on the coast.

This is a shot from the day I first interviewed at the Orphanage. After the interview I wandered around the Presidio in San Francisco and took this shot just as it started to rain. This was actually a much wider shot. I was standing under a bridge to keep from getting wet. I just liked something about the small group of trees that seemed so isolated from everything else. So I cropped in on them.

I liked the simplicity of this shot. It was down on the beach looking out along the edges of the bay I was standing in, trying to peek around the corner and see what was there. I couldn't get any farther down along the waters edge and so it had the "edge of the world" feeling. It was almost like one of those video games where the game map stops and you can't run over a tiny little hedge.

Another shot here from the north shore. It was a tranquil day up in Grand Marias, an awesome little town a few hours north of Duluth, MN. If you ever find yourself there, you should grab a slice of pizza at Sven & Olies. Everytime I find myself there, life seems like a different animal all together. This shot is from Artist's Point. With the flat rock formations, a lot of pools tend to form. I thought the image had a good subtle contrast in the textures, the wind blown pool with its little ripples, the straight rigid rock formations, and the large expanse of lake superior. You can see quite a few other shots from Artist's Point if you click on the tag of "grand marais" below.

This sister image to the one a posted a few posts back. I was edging along a very steep beach in a cove on Lake Superior trying to see what was around the corner. I liked the ragged outlines in the image and the subtle lighting just hinting at what textures exist in the shapes.

Well I am back in the bay area. Its good to be back in California although I will always love portland. I took a job again at Image Movers Digital. Its a bit of a course correction for me, I found myself to far on the development side of things and wanted to make sure I was involved in the art side as well. I am happiest being able to do both technical and artistic work.

This photo is another from my vacation on the oregon coast. It is using a tilt and shift lens, but more in the manner that the lense is intended rather than to get the miniature effect. I was able to keep the f-stop around 2 and yet get the large rock in the distance and the close up wall with holes in focus. Its a really nice lens. It doesn't have auto focus and in tilting and shifting it makes the in camera light meter inaccurate. I actually like both of those aspects as it forces me to be a bit more traditional about how I shoot. You definitely lose something letting the computer do all the thinking for you.

The holes in the foreground rock were birds nests, thought there were no occupants.

I always find the north bay very interesting. Its cool being back in this area. Its a really unique landscape. It has the golden hills of San Jose, but also large flat valleys where the bay seeps in.

This image is from a year ago, when I was waiting for my car to get fixed. There are a set of small walkways to the powerline towers out in the swampy areas of the bay. This one didn't have any gates. So we walked out to a couple of the towers and I snapped this shot trying to frame the scene.
