I thought I would start the new year off right, so here is one of my favorite pictures. The picture felt appropriate given that most of the country is shrouded in winter. We just got back from Minnesota yesterday. It was interesting seeing the change in climate. When I left San Jose it was 60 degrees.. and when I arrived in Minneapolis it was a whopping -23 degrees with the wind chill. I snapped this shot while on a train going back to Spokane a few years back. Even though I love the picture it didn't quite capture the magic of the moment.. the hill was practically glowing when I took it. Happy New Year Everyone!

Now for something a little warmer. I took this a couple of weeks ago on the way back from LA. I was looking through my pictures while I was in Minneapolis.. and this one reminded me of the warm California that I was eager to get back to.

Well there goes my New Year's resolution. "I am gonna post everyday", I told myself. Its not like I am gonna run out of photos..

This was a picture I took while I lived in Spokane and hiked down by Riverside Park. This male was keeping an eye on his family across the river. The area around their nest had been ravaged by a forest fire a few years before.

I find myself getting pulled in so many directions lately. I have photos to take, 3d characters to model, 3d environments to make, tools to program, c++ to learn, and several stories that have been brewing in my head to write. Its like having children.. you don't want to neglect any of them... but then concentrating on all of them means you spend little time on any of them. So you lock them all up down in the basement just to be fair. : )

This shot was taken years ago with one of my old point and shoots. It has always meant a lot to me. I grew up traveling down tracks like these and yet the first time I walked these tracks it was a new adventure. I had never really lived in a big city before, much less hiked around one... and I was just getting to know Ocala. These tracks are "her" tracks... the ones she grew up around.

We took the BART and the MUNI, parts of San Francisco's train system, to go see a art show at Giant Robot. It was made up of a variety of artists all doing work based on the theme of "tree". As with every trip to a Giant Robot store, there were lots of magazines/figures I wanted to buy. Unlike usual, I managed to resist as I am dirt poor until work starts.

I went hiking out Big Basin Redwoods State Park yesterday. There were two ultra large trees, one named "Mother of the Forest" and the other, "Father of the Forest". "Mother" was the supposedly the tallest redwood in the area, while the "Father" had a large diameter. All of the trees in the area were gigantic. It was fun and refreshing to get out.

One of the interesting things about Big Basin is that the woods were so shaded and saturated that the sunlit areas were steaming. As I first got out of the car I saw wisps of steam coming up from the parking lot and took a bunch of pictures thinking it was a one time thing. I laughed when I realized it was happening all over the place.

A couple of weeks ago, Blur got an Oscar nomination for its short Gopher Broke. It couldn't have happened to a better group of people and here's hoping they take home a little golden statue. Even if they don't, the nomination should do a lot for them.

As for me I have started at a company called "the Orphanage" in San Francisco. The commute has been quite long, somewhere between one and two hours each way. I am hoping I can start taking the train as I am worried my car won't last long putting 100+ miles on it everyday.

In other news, this site has been enduring a constant comment-spam attack. It pisses me off. I end up having to erase tons of bogus comments everyday. Its so stupid that people would be that disrespectful as to abuse such things.

We went drove down to LA last weekend and stayed with one of Ocala's Aunts and her boyfriend. Ocala's sister recently moved to LA and is staying in a RV in the driveway. All in all, she is getting an interesting/authentic experience of California. In addition to having a mountain view out the windows of the RV, the house and property were once owned by an older couple who had a fondness for birds. In fact, half the property is occupied by various kinds of bird cages and wild peacocks now roam about. There were also several orphaned flights of overgrown stairs that seem like they once lead you to beautiful gardens. I was lucky enough to get a shot with both the stairs and a peacock.

This male had just finished his courtship dance and was moving off. An interesting thing to note is that the display is not only visual but also auditory. When he fluttered his feathers it made a sound that was a cross between a hum and an alarmed rattlesnake. Its too bad the property is rented and going to be leveled to build condos at some point this year.

On a site management note... I have decided to screen comments to before they appear on the site.. not to censor anyone's opinion, but to guard against comment-spamming.. this site keeps getting filled up with it. After trying several php security measures I am going with the screening process. I feel bad that people won't see their posts up right away, but its that or have them surrounded by junk mail. :( Please don't let it discourage you from giving feedback, I appreciate it immensely.

This is a shot I took on the last day of my vacation. Work has kept me pretty busy. The hours aren't bad but the commute adds 2-3 hrs a day depending on how much I am willing to break the laws of physics. There is a lot of beautiful stuff along the drive, I have been tempted to stop everyday and take shots but always find myself in a rush.

This particular view isn't along my drive but rather along the coast on the drive between Santa Cruz and San Francisco. It was a beautiful day that was constantly being chased by huge storms coming off the ocean.

<previous April 02 2005 - 01 San Diego Zoo, San Diego, CAnext>
The Monterey Bay Aquarium released the great white that they have been caring for the past 6 months. I have been listening to NPR a lot on my drive into work and they just had a panel discussion on the subject a few days before with biologists from the aquarium as well as a shark field researcher against the captivity of this animal. Its funny that while I agreed with almost everything the field researcher said, his lack of tact and his hostility toward the other scientists put me off. It was hard to tell if he cared more for the animal or being right. In the end he should be happy, it only took a couple of days after his remarks for the shark to be released.

The debate made me think of elephants I had seen at the San Diego Zoo. As much as I admire the work that the zoo keepers and biologists do, you can't look at the elephants walking in circles or standing in place, rocking back and forth, and wonder if they wouldn't be better off in the wild.

Work has kept me really busy these past couple of months. I can't wait to get out again and shoot pictures. I have stolen a few moments to do that from time to time, during a random power outage or along the commute to work, but not as much as I would like.

This time feels like one of those in between moments. I guess that's why I picked this picture for it. I took it a few years ago while traveling back from Minnesota to Washington (state), where I was living at the time. It was a moment where we were in between everything. We had been driving for over a day (the trek actually started in Michigan after the vacation we had there) and we stopped at a diner in the middle of no where, not even really sure what time of day it was, just that our bellies were empty. As we walked out I saw the dog eyeing me.

There were actually three dogs in the truck, but he was the only one interested in what was going on around him. He was trying to decide whether I was bark worthy. He barked a little half.. or maybe even eighth-hearted bark that sounded more like a grumble and then decided I was a friend. His ears perked and I heard his tail thumping in the bed of the truck. I snapped the picture while he was still in middle of his decision.

After a brief break I am back to work. My car got broken into last month. I have spent the past month on a journey of getting my car back to the shape it was in before the break in.

I thought I would be safe with a $60 radio, who would want to steal that right? Considering the money I have had to spend repairing the window, door, and dash board... my next radio will the taken out and left in the passenger seat ready to go with the doors unlocked. : )

On the upside though I paid off the car a couple of months ago and its now all mine. I have taken the opportunity (since I have been running around to mechanics and dealers for parts) to get the car some much needed attention. It is a freeing feeling to have that debt off my hands.

I lived for several years as an adult without a car. I recommend it to everyone to do at some point. It makes you realize how silly the whole culture surrounding them is and it makes you appreciate the car you have all the more. I always remember one day years ago when I was eating lunch in, at the job I had at the time, and one of my co-workers who had always made his hatred of the car pool lane known, went into a big "its my right as an American to have a comfortable and quick drive to work and drive my car where ever I please" speech.

This is another shot from a day when I wandered around while work was having a power outage. Its a favorite photo of mine. There is just something about it that is appealing. With the sunset just around the corner, it seems like a quite place away from the action and the contrast between the strong hues of the sky and light and the subtle ones of the buildings is something I wish was in more of my work.

<previous June 02 2005 - 01 In Flight Over Minnesotanext>
I flew home to Minnesota this past weekend. I say home despite the fact I haven't lived there for a few years now and I didn't grow up there. But it is the midwest.. and its the place I remember feeling the most comfortable. I miss the lushness of early summer. I like northern California, but the amount of life and green in Minneapolis when I was there is overwhelming.

This is another cloud shot, everybody takes these, I know. I was taking them mostly for work reference (you never know when you are going to be asked to make clouds), but thought this one turned out really pretty. The combination of sunset colors outside and the polarizer on my lens reacting with the polarized air plane glass made for a nice range of color.

Another picture from the past weekend in Minnesota. Everytime I go there I am drawn to take pictures around the river. I say "around" because it isn't really about taking picture of the river itself, but rather the atmosphere and life surrounding it. In a lot of ways the Mississippi reminds me of walking down railroad tracks. You see the backyards and hidden things of places, not the pristine front that faces the road. Here's where weeds grow, fallen trees remain and ducks are free to go about their business.

Well Ocala and I got hitched. The wedding went beautifully. It was pouring rain on and off throughout the day, but it cleared up just in time. We all hung out in the yard and in the tent, drinking and eating and then had the ceremony under a large oak tree.

Whenever I see a lighthouse the thing that fascinates me the most is the lens that focuses the light. The Fresnel lens made light houses range much greater and also helped pave the way for photography lenses. We also use some of the same techniques in my 3d work to approximate proper reflections and lighting.

This is another shot from the Split Rock Lighthouse. It is the climb up to where the lens is held. I don't really think its the prettiest photo, but the contrasts in it held my interest. The geometric contrasts of the square bricks and window against the elegant arch of the stairs. Its a bunch of squares and rectangles trying to exist in cylindrical world of the lighthouse.

The lighting is also in contrast and is what initiated the photo. The warm light from the sun coming in the window and the cool glare on the bricks from the blue sky visible above.

Work has been crazy lately. I am programming stuff for the artists to use and trying to be a supervisor at the same time. I think this project will have everyone stretched a little thin.

They are sending me to Korea in about a month for I think about three weeks (maybe less). It will be my first time out of North America. I will let you all know how it goes. I got a spiffy new lens that I am hoping to get shots with over there.

Its funny these days I look at almost everything as a chance to take interesting photos. Danger? who cares... it will make an awesome shot! : )

Things are still pretty crazy. I haven't gone to Korea yet, they keep moving around the shooting schedule. It looks like it will be the end of October.

This shot is another honeymoon pic and one that I like a lot. "Dandelions?" you might say, "everyone shoots those!" Well all I can say is that they bring back wonderful memories and there is something very respectable about such a beautiful plant that prefers to be called a weed rather than a flower.

By the way, anyone seen where I left September? I swear it's around here somewhere.

Well I take back what I said, Seoul is quite a different city in the daylight. Its been a lot of fun so far. I stole a moment from set to wander around an open air set in the backlot of the studio. It was pretty awesome and weird all at once. It was a town completely desolate and if you looked in the buildings they were little more than facades. It went on for quite a stretch. There were a lot of turns that looked like they were going somewhere really cool and ended abruptly. I felt like I was looking for the cheese in a maze designed for humans.

I went on a hike with a three guys from the Australian puppeteering team and one of our translator's father. They hiked up the mountain... I am in bad shape...so 10 minutes up I told them to go on without me. I wandered around a Buddist temple. It was very crowded. I would say it was touristy... but there were almost all Koreans there... so its more local people visiting.

I ended up doing quite a bit of hiking on my own. It allowed me to sit for a couple of hours and listen to the leaves. After spending the past week in this thriving city, in was very refreshing.

<previous November 16 2005 - 01 KOFIC Namyangju Studios, Koreanext>
Yesterday we went on set at KOFIC Namyangju Studios to show Director Bong some shots for review. Producer Cho was nice enough to give us an impromptu tour of the different sets on the complex. This included a set from Joint Security Area (JSA). I didn't see the movie until last night after visiting the set. It was amazing. Director Bong's and Director Park's films have a complexity to the characters that draws you in and seems to have been done with ease.

The first day I got off the plane here I went straight from the airport to a dinner with the crew. I sat across from Kang-ho Song who played, Sgt. Oh Kyeong-pil, the prominent North Korean soldier in JSA and Detective Park Doo-Man in Memories of Murder. He poured me several glasses of soju (akin to Korean vodka)with one hand which in Korean culture is a sign of friendship. He was a super nice guy, a character and I have grown to respect his work greatly.

In the middle of writing this I got a call that the camera crew was in the downstairs lobby. They got us presents. I won't say what it is cause they got presents for other people too, but it was very heart felt. Its gonna be sad to go. They have been such a great help to us, and me in particular, as my job was to get information from them. We gave them with the chromeball (something we shoot for lighting and reflection data for cg work) that we have been using on set a couple of days ago. It was incredible nice of them. I feel honored to have worked with them. Despite the language barrier its been easy to understand each other and see their dedication and skill in the art of film.
